A domain is basically a name which is registered in order for the internet to recognise a certain computer, or computer group.  Domains are generally registered for the use of a website on them.  Domains can be bought and sold, they can be sold on for all different reasons, it could be that the domain is no longer in use, or that the company that the domain was registered for is no longer trading.  Domains are bought for a variety of different reasons, some people buy a certain domain name, to enable there website to be more recognisable on the web, ie. A certain domain could have a good search engine ranking.

So in simple terms the domain name is simply the part of the address which appears first after www.  It is also the last part of an email address which comes after the @.  Domain names are both useful in personal and business use.  Plus are good if you have your own online shop, email address or website.  When a domain name is registered it is usually for a period of one or two years, there are methods in which you can automatically renew the domain registration.  There is also a cancellation procedure for if the domain is no longer needed by the customer.

Domains are bought and sold on the internet, there are lots available for sale, but there may be many bidders for each domain.  Finding an unused domain can be more work that you think.  Many of the companies on the web who sell domains, also try to sell the customer a website too.  They offer website building services too, and can help with getting your company recognised on the internet.

A companies website cannot function without a registered domain.  Websites have become a very important and influential part of the business world, with most companies now having an up and running website.  Many companies in business are actively trading on the internet on a day to day basis.  Sales pitches are now done via the web rather than the telephone, the internet business is booming, and can continue trading through the night whilst most sleep.  Understanding computers, communication and emails is a critical part of business nowadays, and one which cannot be ignored.  Computer education has now become part of the curriculum in many schools, with most children now learning the internet from 4 years of age.
